Here is my problem, I only have one port open(80) on a satellite box. It is running aix 4.2.1. What I want, is a way to have a console on that box displayed to me from any location in the country. I may not be explaining it the way I mean it, so here is an example of what I want..
I want to be sitting in Philly or wherever, and be able to connect to the console of the box in Nashville by using a web browser. Is this possible. I'm pretty sure it is, and I've set up VNC to do it once in Solaris, but I'm not sure how I did it. The problem is I don't need an X session, but just a console only. Any ideas, questions to refine the problem are welcome.(and no I cannot open telnet or ssh, just the web port)

Thanks
bill

No, hence the statement....

A question to refine the problem:
Do you want to just open an AIX "terminal session" or MUST it be THE AIX system console ?
(I don't think I can help you on this one but if it MUST be THE system console, then this will be even more complicated).

No, it is not necessary. A terminal window would be fine. I just need to be able to login and start some scripts every few days. Unfortunately it's not on a static schedule or I would cron it.

What about installing Webmin? If I remember that offers you a terminal session too. But it will mean installing it on all the boxes you want to access. IBM Certified Confused - MQSeries

That's an idea...I only need access to the one box, but I do remember webmin having a very limited command window...kind of like the the novell one.

If I remember correctly it was a java based shell session, but good enough for command line shell access. Not exactly all the bells and whistles, but OK for remote admin.

VNC may be an option, but it will require installing the VNC server at the server end. The problem may come in with configuring it to use port 80, never gone down this road yet.
And it will require the VNC viewer at the client end, I'm not aware of a browser implementation of the VNC viewer, but who knows, it may be out there. IBM Certified Confused - MQSeries

I had originally thought of using vnc, since I have used it in the past to hook up to linux servers by pushing it out with the vnc java server client. The problem with that one is you need X, and I chose not to install it on the server I'm connecting too for the cpu's sake. I have downloaded the webmin install for aix and should have it completed by the end of the weekend(have to get some free time first) and I will post results. A second option that I had not really wanted to do was to connect in to another box on the lan and telnet to the server from that host...that way I could use a vnc client on any old windows based client. I elected not to do so however, due to bandwidth limitations(that would be a vnc tunnel to host, then a telnet connnection to the box...can you say saturated dial up?

It works beautifully, kind of a lag(even on fast connection) for the command window, but it doesn't need another port. Just 10000. Most excellent. Thanks for the assist!
