Hey Guys

I am trying to connect two sites together HQ + remote. The problem i'm having is that i can ping one subnet but not the other. for example i can ping 10.5.2.1 but i can't ping 10.5.3.1. Can any one point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance

We need more information than that! ************************

yes more info is needed. You say you have another network.
Have you setup a routing protocal rip, rip2, igrp, etc etc?
Maybe a secondary ip address and or a static route!!! Jeter@LasVegas.com

I hope this is more clear than my previous question. Here's the deal we have a total of 8 (routers) offices all connected to our HQ.(main router) All of the 8 routers come in the main router in HQ. we have 9 separate subnets I also have a pix sitting behind the main router (HQ)The routers we currently have are Danube's I'm trying to replace them all with Cisco routers. The problem I'm having is that I can only ping one subnet but not the others. My submask (255.255.255.0) is the same on all subnets I'm assuming that I don't need change anything on my firewall config.. since the subnets have been defined is this correct? Do think I need to make changes to the main router? Anyhow I hope this made more sense than my last question let me know if you need additional information.
Thanks in advance

setup a network protocol using rip, rip2 or whatever you want. This should help you out. Type sh ip route on the cisco and you will discover the routing protocols. Jeter@LasVegas.com

As Jeter said, make sure that you have routes set up between the central office and the remote office. I presume that you are trying to ping all remote sites from the central site. If the PIX is set up corretly so that we can take that out of the equation for now and concentrate on getting the routing right, then you need to ensure that either RIP or EIGRP is running correctly or that you have your static routes set up correctly. Do all of the remote offices just connect to the central office or are they meshed with other remote offices?

If they are meshed (ie. you might have one interface connecting to the central office and one connecting to another remote office offering an alternative route)then a routing protocol such as RIP or EIGRP should be used to advertise routes. If one link should fail then the alternative route will be advertised. However, if each office only connects to the central office then static routes can be used as each router (apart from the central one) only has one outbound interface and therefore can use a default route to route all external traffic out of.

The central router could then have a static route for each remote network. For example, interface 1 might point to 10.5.2.0/24, interface 2 might point to 10.5.3.0/24 etc.. If this is set up correctly then you should be able to ping all remote offices from the central office. If you can't then I suggest that you take a look at the routing tables and see what's going on. Also, make sure that your remote routers have a route pointing back (should be the default route).

Good luck.

Chris.

if u're trying to ping the devices from the dosprompt -i guess- u have to make a static route.

this can be done as follows:

route add 10.5.3.1 mask 255.0.0.0 gateway

gateway is the next hop i guess u know

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your response. In regars to you question all the routers are meshed. I did enable RIP to advertise the routes but i've had not luck. when i use the show ip router
i only see one interface up even though did a no shut on the othe other interface i still don't see it up. Do you have any other suggestions?

thanks

WOW that should work, try to setup rip2 are another routing protocol. Jeter@LasVegas.com

Hey Guy's i figured out what the problem was. I'm even embarassed to tell you guys what it is but what the heck live and learn. The reason i was not able to ping to any other interfaces was becuase i did not specify a defualt gateway (doh!). Anyhow thanks for your help.

Hey ... it happens to the best of us!!! We all make silly mistakes sometimes! The thing is of course, when you have a similar problem in the future you'll instantly know what to check!! We like to call it "gaining experience"!!

Always check the simple stuff first ... he he!!

Good luck!!
