Remote conection to Partner System problems

The problem of remote connection to the Partner system has been discussed many times in this forum, especially in regard to PCMCIA or other laptop modems. I just would like to know if anyone has made any further progress. I can connect with the built-in modem at 2400 bd, and get the login. I bought an old Megahertz 14400 PCMCIA modem which gives rock solid connection at 14400 but will not negotiate the Session Initiation. Does anyone know why the session initiation might fail? Does it have to do with flow control, stop bits, error correction, or any other user settings etc? The Partner documentation, as usual, is rather sparse!
 
As I understand it, I belaive you are supposed to get a US robotics v.92 external modem. That is what Avaya says works the best. Makes it easy for those of us with laptops, to carry an external modem.. TY AVAYA...
 
You might try S-L-O-W speeds, say, 4800 or even 2400. This is necessary for reliable connections, sez an Avaya tech. And this has worked for me. And, yes, a Lucent modem built into my laptop works. I wonder if the speed negotiation features of the classic US Robotics modem are its main advantage?
This Avaya product is like other phone software, IMHO, in that it is old, not smart and fragile. I purchased some Panasonic software recently; the guide said to be sure the phone software was at least from 1995 !
Heck, I'd go for a simple command line if it would work. --Almost anything is better than a two-line lcd screen.

Yes--slower speeds seem to work better. On my laptop I had to go into the Advanced modem settings and adjust the receive and transmit buffer settings to "Low", which Microsoft recommends if you are having connection problems. Now my laptop modem (a Conexant) connects reliably at 2400 bd, which it would not do when those settings were on "High".
