Remote Boot UPS - possible? This would be very important.

Over the weekend 7-30-05, we needed to reboot the UPS controlling the phones, Internet, etc.

1. I did not know the power went out which knocked out the phones and Internet to the desktops.

2. What would be the easiest way to auto reboot the UPS or manually reset it?

3. Also to get an email aleart to my cell phone and to other company staff to have them check on the problem and reset the UPS if needed?

Thanks, Dave

What kind of UPS do you have ? APC has PowerChute s/w.

If it's APC, you can get the SNMP management card which allows you to:
- remotely administer the UPS via browser or telnet/ssh
- monitor the status (voltage, load) of the UPS
- set up alerts (email, traps) for events like power outages and UPS shutdown

The snmp card would work only if your internet connection (modem)is restored when the power is restored. You could always put a modem connected straight to the AC, then see if the management card allows direct dial-in...

True, I was considering the in-band management for a solution to the original #1 and #3 problems. For IB and OB management I can recommend the terminal servers from Western Telematic.
