I am new to Windows 2000 Server and have been put in charge (help!) of developing a Backup plan for our server. I would like to use a Remote Linux server that has 80 gig of space as the so called "tape drive". The server is actually an Apache Web Server that I have purchased because I will be putting some websites on it as well. I have FTP access to the server, but am not sure where to put the files either.

I do not currently have any kind of backup software on my server (which has 25 gig of files that need to be backed up, this is a file server and after the initial upload, about 50-100 Mb a day would be backed up) and would like some ideas on how you would achieve this.

Is anyone currently doing this? Am I crazy? Should I just tell my boss to buy some tapes?(he has been through a fire and doesn't trust that way)

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would get a tape drive and some tapes. Backing up to your linux box wouldn't give you more than a couple of days worth of save sets, but with tapes you are only limited by how many tapes you are willing to purchase. Also, you should periodically send tapes off-site, this way if your building burns down you don't lose everything. Check out Iron Mountain ( thats who I currently use. Or just take the tapes and leave 'em in a fireproof case at home, etc.
Backups are very important. Don't be the admin who gets caught w/his pants down.
