Greetings:

I've just joined a SQL 2005 Study group. I have a server at the office of the company I work for. It is a windows based infrastructure with a sonicwall firewall. I have been given one of the companies IP addresses for my own use. I can also use the VPN client to negotiate the firewall. Finally, I have a router. I want to securely connect to my server from outside of the office. After consulting with sonicwall I have opened port 1433 for TCP/UDP. Before I proceed, I seek some guidance so this can proceed securely and with no packets intended for my network penetrating the companies network.

You really need to find a Network group to post this on. DBAs don't tend to do a lot of network security for servers unless they're working in a 1 person shop. My own networking skills are so old, I couldn't tell you the best way to approach this.

Sorry.

As an Admin, opening port 1433 to the 'net is suicide. Shut that down asap. Hundreds of malwares attack that port, most notably Slammer (which is still active in the wild).

You need to go with the VPN route. That way your secure encrypted traffic is dumped onto the company's intranet as if you were local.
