Have been using external modem with PC for remote admin (local dial 76) with no problems using win98, had to upgrade to winXP, same PC and modem, now will not connect, has anyone had sucess with remote admin and win XP?
I was using 6.09 so I even upgraded that to 7

Hi gene1,
If it helps, Admin runs okay on my XP machines. So it's compatible with XP. I'm running a USR 56K modem, external. Be interesting to know if Brian's excellent suggeston fixes it for you. I have heard of some people having to reinstall the modem.

We've had a lot of challenges with XP and inexpensive modems connecting to phone systems. Same thing, old machine under DOS works fine, but same modem under XP won't connect. The best solution we've found so far is to go to the flea markets or computer junk shows and pick up a Hayes Smartmodem-9600 or a USR Courier-9600 modem. We've also had problems putting newer modems on WIN systems for RMAT. WIN told us to get a "Hayes modem, not a clone," we did, and it worked fine. Newer hi-speed modems and "Hayes-compatible" modems may work, or they may not. Hard to tell. Slow modems are cheap, usually 5-15 bucks, and it fixes the problems. Same thing with the laptop - we got a PC-card USR 14400 bps modem and it connects every time.

Thanks for the 3 replys, will give them all a try and post back after the weekend, I've been using a USR 33.6 external modem on both the PC, and take it with me for use with the laptop, still works with the laptop(win98) but stopped working on the PC as soon as I installed XP, tried uninstalling and re-installing the modem to no avail, the reason I was using the external is I never had any luck connecting with Win type modems, even on local connects, even tried just with ACS stand alone and no VM and it never got passed connected at 14400, switched to this external modem and have had no trouble at all, even dialing into systems long distance.

Thanks for all the input, tried EXSMOGGER's way and it works, set the compatability mode to win98, and can connect again, tried 5 times local and also to various customers as well , and can connect and send and retrieve system info!
thanks again
