Hi

I know zero about linux but a client has purchased from PC World an Acer Notebook loaded with linux. They have asked me to set up remote access to their office XP machine,

At the present time they are using Windows terminal services\remote desktop from their home xp pc system.

I know I could use vnc but recently (and confirmed on the web) I have has security issues with hackers using the vnc port to gain entry.Would appreciate any suggestions

thanksIan

Hi there,

Linux does have a Terminal Services client, and it's often installed by default. What's your client's Linux distribution?

Hi

Ok tried the laptop it seems to have a GUI ( helps windows nuts like me)

it's running lapus linux lite V1.0.13 E

by mistake I also posted on the server forum and I'm told there is a windwows RDC for linux?

All very cinfusing really

cheers

Ian

Get the client to type rdesktop in a command line, if it comes back with options, then you know it's installed. There will most likely be a shortcut in the GUI, otherwise it can be run from the CLI itself.

Failing a shortcut, they can make a quick script which will rdesktop to the server desired, and link that to a shortcut.

Hi

thanks for taking the trouble to reply, think I'll pick up the notebook tomorrow and have a play over the weekend

cheers

I suspect rdesktop (like vnc) has little if any security (in terms of encryption).
I guess you should be considering using some form of VPN or encrypted tunnel (ssh?) to route your rdesktop connection through.

Trojan.

rdesktop supports encryption.

I would think using tsclient as a front end for rdesktop would be helpful in this case.

Linpus Lite on the Acer is a verry stripped down distro
you may find it woth while to investigate installing another

Fedora 11 works well out of the box & only requires a few tweaks for optimal perfomance
unbuntu netbook remix should also not cause any problems
