Remote Access to Visual Source Safe 1

Does anyone know if Visual Source Safe can be set up using the internet for remote users, without using a VPN or SourceOffSite?

I suppose you can use it using UNC name. For example, you can map remote computer drive using

NET USE Q: \\IP.IP.IP.IP\VSS

Than use it in VSS for work. It will be quite slow unless you have excellent internet connection from both sides.
