remote access security

I would like to work from home connecting to Mysql database and develope forms and reports using Microsoft Access 97 as the front end, Im told that it is possible the server would need to be setup with a port opened ,but it would leave our server open for hackers.
I would like some other opinions on this problem please

ps does anyone know how long is keyword search going to be out of commision, its been about a week so far.

I guess you could setup a VPN. Though it would involve a lot of extra work to get it going. //Daniel
