Remote Access Security Question

I was asked the following question by a prospective employer and I have to admit I didn't know the answer. Can anyone point me in the right direction for future reference.

How would I configure my companies laptops to ensure that I can remotely manage them from my company network whilst ensuring that the laptop remained secure?

I have since thought along the following lines:

Restrict remote access TO the computer to only a few IP addresses.
Close all unnecessary ports on the laptop except those needed for the remote access & things like Ports 80, 25 etc.

are you trouble shooting in house or while they are out?

If in you can use remote desktop, Real VNC, or PC Anywhere, If off site the create a VPN tunnel.
