I'm getting the following error in my System Event log, literally thousands of times.
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
I have Remote Access Connection manager (also the 'Auto' connection manager) set to Manual, and they are not started, telephony is also disabled as I can't see why anything I have on my machine needs telephony.

So something is trying to start them and I have no idea what. I'm just looking for a point in the right direction.

I've disabled the two services, which seems to have stopped the error, but if there's some 'rogue program' out there trying to start this I'd like to know about it. Everything on the computer seems to work, but I just get nervous thinking there's some daemon on my machine trying to start telephony services and remote access services--it just sounds nefarious.
Thanks,

This service is required if you use Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing. You might need this service for some direct cable/DSL providers and ISP's (AOL for one), depending on how they implement their logon process. Other services, telephony, need it to work properly. If you disable one, the others won't perform as they should.

Hope this helps!

Lots of good help and information here as you struggle with understanding Services.

Windows XP x86 (32-bit) Service Pack 3 Service Configurations

Mine, and most I venture to say, have "Telephony" set to Manual. Mine is also Started and Running. "Provides Telephony API (TAPI) support for programs that control telephony devices on the local computer and, through the LAN, on servers that are also running the service".

Thanks guys,
Out of curiosity, what common user programs would need TAPI these days? I guess in the old days I figure modems would, or if you had specialized call-center dialing software that might use it. But if someone has a non-POTS modem, and no special dialing software, I'm at a loss.
Thanks,

You saw what happens if you disable it, and it is set by default to manual and seems to be started and running, so something must be using it in Windows, sorry I wouldn't know what.

This might help you track down what is using it on your system.
