I'm setting up a laptop with an i2050. The laptop works perfectly on the local network.

Now...for the problem. When I put the laptop outside the local network (public IP address), it doesn't connect to the BCM
HERE'S the setup:

REMOTE ip laptop...VPN with Linksys Quick VPN...logged into the network...
local IP address 10.150.40.XX

I can't even ping the BCM.

Is there a place in the BCM to tell it a default gateway?...allow remote user?...
My understanding is that the remote phones work via VPN...but can't get it..

If anyone has any input, I'd appreciate it. OR, if you want to help me...let me know

Can you ping the BCM from the remote PC on the VPN

NO,
can't ping, can't browse the web interface..nothing.

I can ping and see other pc's on the VPN network, however..

Look and see what your public IP is set for the BCM. Can you access the BCM or ping the BCM through this published address from outside the LAN? If not, find out what firewalls might be in place between the BCM and the web. For instance: we have a couple of BCMs sitting behind a Cisco 2600 that's behind a Cisco Pix firewall. we had to open ports 28000-28900 and ports 7000 to get access to the BCM with our softphones. Hope this helps

The BCM has 2 LAN ports.. I have tried it both ways...
(with a public address, and a private address...-via VPN).

I am trying to get as close to Nortel's scenario.. (VPN).

The firewall is wide open...

my assumption was that if you VPN into the network, it is like you are physically located on the LAN.

once again: I can ping/access other devices on the local network VIA VPN

and
I can ping/access the BCM from a local PC

BUT..

I can do neither from the laptop when on VPN...

--(locally the laptop works)
on a public IP address...with VPN running ..no dice.

can you access the BCM from both LAN ports through the published IP?

I can access the BCM LOCALLY...on the LAN....no problem

I cannot access it remotely..at all (public IP, or private IP, via VPN)...no ping, no nothing.

you need to set the next hop router on the BCM to be the default gateway on the network

Services-----netlink manager-----then click on the right hand tab and add the router IP address as the next hop address.

I got that....crap.....thought that might be it.

but still....no dice.

I agree, there it sure looks like a LAN issue where the BCM is installed. Double check the default route and subnet mask on the BCM to see that it matches the other computers on that same LAN segment. It might not be a bad idea to also verify that your default gateway made it into the routing table by using putty and going to the command line. Type "route print" and hit enter. Make sure that the 0.0.0.0 route is pointing to the LAN IP of your Linksys box.

Perhaps you could try a trace route to a public IP when you're connected to the BCM's network and find out where the route's failing.
For example : open your run dialog box and type in either cmd or command. When your command prompt opens, type
tracert 216.109.117.107 (a yahoo address) and see where the route stops.
