Relocating, Router Reconfiguration

Dear All:

I hope all is well.

Gonna be relocating to another city and everything from servers to routers will be migrated to new location.
Wondering how will the router have to be reconfigured if it's gonna be a new ISP? It's usually a static configuration in regards to no BGP, RIP protocols being used. Being this the case, is this a matter of changing IP addresses? Just want to get a global idea of the implementation change aspect of it all.

Thanks!

Sunden,

Moving to a new ISP should be relatively simple as far as router configs go, but may require a little "co-ordination" with the ISP themselves to ensure that the transistion runs smoothly and on time. In a well designed network, you should not need to change your 'inside' network, just the reconfiguration of your internet router, and possibly your Firewall.

1. Unless you own the public IP addresses you currently use, you will have to give them back to your old ISP.
2. The new ISP will give you IP addresses for your router interface (that connects to the ISP) and usually a range of public IPs which you can use for your web/mail servers etc.
3. When you move to the new ISP, on your internet router, add the new IP address have been assigned to the internet interface. Change the default route to go to the new ISP.
4. If you do NAT on your router, remember that you have a new IP address pool, so change the NAT statements as applicable.
5. Remember to change the IPs on servers if they are assigned public addresses.
6. If the ISP hosts your DNS, then ensure that these are transfered to your new ISP. This may not happen overnight, so this is where the co-ordination between ISP is required.

Good luck
