I'm working on a friend's win98 computer. It boots up and reaches a point where it gives an iexplorer has performed an illegal operation and must be terminated error message.

So, I have a couple questions:

1) Is there any way I can fix the problem through the command line or the win98 disk?

2) If I have to reinstall the OS, will it wipe data files or just the OS? (Not real familiar with reloading Win98).

Thanks for any assistance.

you can use iefix. download it from here (majorgeeks).

it's safe to re-install win98 w/o damaging the data or the installed softwares.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

"If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get one million miles to the gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside."

Over the top" reloads won't normally cause damage. They don't always resolve all the problems on the first try.
They also tend to wipe out installed patches. They overwrite the previously installed files, so there isn't anything removed.

You might want to put the install stuff on the hard drive in a separate install directory. Installs faster that way and you won't need to search for the CD when things are changed.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Just want to clarify that in Ed's "put the install stuff on the hard drive" suggestion, he's referring to the entire CAB directory on the CD that contains all the OS installation files.
