it seems that on my notes r5 server, once the mail gets a pending status the router does not resend. The only way held mail sent is to manually select all messages and select release all selected held mesages. Should the router resend the messages automatically? Is there something I missed in the configuration? The mail is being held because server is not responding (good domains - slow response)

you probably enabled 'hold undeliverable mail' in the configuration document for your server.
which will hold undeliverable mail instead of sending out a delivery failure.
These will only be send out if they're released manually.
Pending messages that couldn't be send out at the first try, will be retried a few times, which is something you can control through the configuration document.
on the server console you can type 'tell router show' to get a list of pending messages, the reason why they're still pending and when it's going to try to deliver those again.
