I am currently building a web based application and would like to release a demo version to a select group for feedback (basically give them a cd since the site isn't live). I need to lock the files so that:

1. Only the index.htm file is accessable

and

2. None of the files are editable

What is the best way to accomplish this?

(I will also need to zip the files to fit the entire project on a single disc)

Good luck.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!

Is it possible to hide a subfolder? I'm thinking that I can put all of the supplementary files into the subfolder, hide it and leave only the index.htm file visable.

I'm not as worried about the editing as I am with making sure that they are opening the correct file.

Would it be easier to set up the disc with an autorun feature that opens the index.htm file?

I would do the Autorun. Yes you can hide a folder by right clicking it>Properties> Check the hidden box.

Any savvy indvidual will be able to defeat this though.

what level of "isn't Live" are you refering to?

Not hosted?
hosted with a temp comming soon page?

if you have it hosted the best thing you can do is create a sub domain for your demo and have your select group access the subdomain.

By "isn't live" I mean that the company that I work for has not decided where to put this application and given that our IT department is a bit stressful to deal with for even the simplest tasks, we don't want to start confusing them with asking to put a demo version up somewhere. Plus, but using CD's we are able to have more control over who sees them, helps up track for feedback, etc..

I've never set up an autorun, how exactly would I do that?

auto run is just a text file called "autorun" open any auto run file in note pad and make the changes you'd need. Usualy just change a file name.

You say that you want none of the files to be editable. In that case I would use ROBODEMO -that's what I do ...

Quote from the Macromedia website:

Macromedia has just announced Macromedia Captivate. Captivate automatically records all on-screen actions and instantly creates an interactive Flash simulation, or a demonstration.

They offer a 15 day trial here :
Good Luck
