Release and renew PC's IP address

Hi all

Have a Netgear DG834G used as an additional access point in a small LAN, IP address range 192.168.0.n

Wish to replace the existing Netgear DG834, (used for internet access), router with a D-Link router with IP address range 192.168.1.n.

If you change the DG834G IP adress to say 192.168.1.50, there is a messagebox with

New IP is not in the same subnet as the old LAN IP, PC's IP address may need to be released and renewed!

How does one release and renew a PC's IP address, or otherwise resolve the issue, please?

the easiest is to reboot them.

You can bring up a CMD window and type
IPCONFIG /RELEASE then
IPCONFIG /RENEW

Tried your suggestion with the messagebox on the screen without success.

Once the IP addrees of the DG834G has been set to 192.168.1.n, you can no longer access it, by its new IP address.

It then requires a factory reset and you are back where you started.

A Netgear DG834 is not a wireless router, whereas a Netgear DG834G has wireless capabilities.

So the gateway router is the Netgear DG834 and wireless access is provided by a couple of Netgear DG834Gs with DHCP disabled, acting as switches and wireless access points, cabled back to the gateway router.

Decided to try and change the IP address range on the D-Link router to 192.168.0.n instead of the Netgear routers.

You nave to set the range, apply the changes and then the router cannot resolve its new IP address.

Force an exit from the router, reboot both pc and router, and then you can access the router with its new ip address.

Hi Chris,

You are trying to change your LAN IP address? You need to do a little planning first. When dealing with both static IP addresses and DHCP issued ones, things can get confusing. For the static assigned devices like the DG834G in WAP mode, or a network printer, each separate device needs to have the IP address changed by connecting to it directly, not through the Gateway. Disconnect the GW. The PC you are using needs to match the IP address subnet, so assign a static IP address to the utility PC that is connecting to the devices. This way the GW router won't be confused by the new IP addresses as you configure each device. You can do the router first, or the other devices. It makes no difference, as long as you understand what you are doing and how your network functions. For the DHCP assigned devices, in Windows you can follow the suggestions above or you can go to the network control panel, and use it to renew the IP address info for the PC also.

Thanks for your reply and explanation of the issues involved.

The problem arose when Netgear and D-Link chose different default IP address ranges.

Unless as a user you are mixing routers from different manufacturers in the same system, I suspect you may not encounter the problem as described.

Hopefully this thread might prove useful to someone else.
