relationship between Active Directory and LDAP

I am trying to find out information about setting up Win
2K to work as a 'LDAP Server', and am trying to figure out
the answer to this question (or 'these questions',
depending on the viewpoint):

To set up Win 2K as a LDAP Server, does one need to
install a third party LDAP Server application (such as the
one available from

http://www.openldap.org)?

Or is the ability to function as a LDAP Server embedded in
the Active Directory functionality (or some other part of
the Win 2K OS)?

No third party is needed. Win2k is LDAP complient. LDAP is an open protocol that allows queries from several different platforms. The following are some info pages:

Active Directory is an LDAP compatible directory (although not fully LDAP complient). So you need to set up your Win2K server as an AD server and then add the attribute classes and attributes into the pre-existing directory schema. Hope this helps.

P.S. It might be good to check exactly what LDAP functionality is needed from the LDAP server before committing to AD. Also be aware that you cannot delete attributes from AD, iff you miss-spell person as preson, preson stays in the schema (although you don't have to use it)
