Hi All

A friend of mine has asked me if it is possible to reinstall the default cd rom through a restore in ME? he cannot seem to locate the cd rom driver in selective restore to reinstall his cd rom. I'm helping him online, or trying to.

He is running winME on a compaq and his cd rom drive cannot be recognized, doesn't even show up in device manager. I told him to try a hardware search (auto) through windows but nothing came out of that.

He had noted about a code 10 error and something about exclamation marks under some of the cd rom controllers.
Things were fine until he was using a program for voice testing, kind of hard without really knowing myself.
I think reinstalling the cd rom drivers would be the solution but they cannot be located in windows option folders. I'm thinking ME may be a different layout than win 98 which is all I know about.

If anyone would know if these driver files can be reinstalled that would be great. Thanks for your time.

Should really Plug and Play and load Generic ATAPI drivers out of it's own driver data base.
Check he has the jumpers set correctly on the back of the drive, the cable the right way around etc. Martin

rjwilldohisbest,

For what is worth, this from MKB
--------------------------------------------
Code 10
If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:

This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)

Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

Solution button: Update Driver

To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

I had similar problems with COMPAQ but found some answers in there hard to navigate Knowledge Base.

Good Luck

Thanks guys for the responses.

My friend had someone come by with the install disk to reinstall the cd rom files.
Things are better now, I hope for some time.

I don't know if I'll ever upgrade out of win 98 myself. I hear so much split emotions about it all. I would need a ram upgrade to even have the xp system, someday I'll upgrade but what I have is fine and Im not using much.

Thanks for the time guys in responding.

Running WinMe with a Creative 5233E 52X CD-ROM as Drive D and a Mitsumi CD-R as Drive E. If an audio disk is put in Drive D I get an Error Message saying Windows cannot access Drive D; I may need permission! Whose? Then if I go into Device Manager it says Drive D is not working properly because a device on which it depends, Secondary IDE (dual fifo) has been dynamically disabled (Code 10). If I shut down and reboot all is well until I put an audio disk in Drive D. It will accept some data disks, such as Clip Art.
