When I start receiving IE 5.5 message problems with Active X Controls, and can no longer download exe files from the browser,I need to know which option is best in resolving these issues,I have already tried the "IE 5 repair tool"....with no results. Consequently:

A: Should I uninstall,then reinstall IE 5?
B: Should I "OVERWRITE" on top of the corrupted IE 5?

Go into Tools->Internet Options and the Security Tab,
Check what level of security you are at....these error messages usually appear at a high level of security, Medium is the defaut level, which should work,if not try a Medium Low, or even Low. You can also do a custom level which is handy as you can specify what you want to be able to download and run on command etc.....

hope this helps and you dont have to reinstall!! Jay~

I've tried the security tab option with all controls set to "enabled" and the level changed to "low"...again with negative results.I am assuming that it has to be with the IE browser,cause I have no problems with my secondary Netscape 6

yea its IE5 alright, Im not sure what the solution may be...what if you try logging in as administrator to your PC and see what happens...
if not, and you want to reinstall....You should overwrite the current version, if it lets you...there wont be much difference compared to a standard remove and install.... Jay~

Service Pack is not a bad idea,only problem is, my IE browser won't download it in it's corrupted state.I wonder if microsoft will let me download it with netscape

Got the lastest service pack installed,but no luck as far as downloading exe files.I get an error locating object handler with this message: Content type: Application/Octet-stream
Possible location of viewer: Microsoft Active X gallery
If anyone knows "excatly" where this file can be found,let me know about I'd appreciate it

ezrider,

Have you clicked the Settings button, then the View Objects button and see if there are any damaged controls? If so, remove them.

look over the following registry script:

The important part is the Content Type. Does your registry entry look the same?

=========================BEGIN CUT=======================
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
@="exefile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\ShellEx]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\ShellEx\{00021500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
@="{88C9E8DE-8D28-11D3-8F3C-00A0249EABF4}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile]
"EditFlags"=hex:d8,07,00,00
@="Application"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open]
@=""
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"
========================END CUT============================

you can add the entire script to your registry by copying and pasting between the lines into Notepad and save the file as exefix.reg. Double-click on the file to correct the problem.

Also go to View>FolderOptions, click the File Types tab, scroll to application. It should also have the Content Type of application/x-msdownload.

reghkr - reference your reply on 3 Aug, are you aware of the full download procedures of IE 5.5 using a W2K box? From what I see, there isn't an option to customize like there is using an NT box... ________

I have 6 "unknown" files in View Objects, Active X types,and 2 java runtime files that are "damaged"
I was just wondering if removing these files will affect my windows stability overall.

ezrider,

I would definaetly Remove the damaged controls. It will not affect stability whatsoever. They are damaged remeber!
Go to StartPrograms>MS-DOS prompt and type this:
C:\WINDOWS>cd downlo~1

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files>dir

If you have a directory called conflict.1, you'll need to delete this also.

SATech,
Doesn't look like it. You could try the corporate download option.
