MY
I have Exch 5.5 on nt 4.0 box. Dir.edb is on d drive ( 1 hard disk) and priv.edb and pub.edb is on e drive (another hard disk). Today, the e drive is corrupted (hardware failure). I have to replace with a new hard disk. But, when I open the Exch Administrator program, it only managed to open the other site of exchange (our other branch). My exch is the headquarter. The other site of exch joined to our organisation (1 org container with 2 site container).
Can I reinstall my exch to restore it? By using previous offline backup? I mean I click the setup program of exch installation to reinstall it and use the backup. WIll it overwrite the current program of exch? And not effect the new one?
tq

You haven't mentioned where your transaction log files are - if you have these on a different drive to the one that's crashed (and you should) then you can just restore the last good online backup of the dbs, and your system will recover with no data loss whatsoever.

faq10-6004 links to th DR document with all the details you need - this is essential, mndatory reading for all admins of production exchange 5.5 servers.

Thanks,

All my log files (transaction logs and directory logs) are on d drive. Only priv.edb and pub.edb is on the corrupted drive.I don't do online backups. Just offline backup. If I just copy and paste the priv and pub edb files to the new drive (named it e drive), and do isinteg -patch, will my exch be restored like normal?
tq

I have restored my exch yesterday. I did my offline exch restoration. I changed to a new hard disk, named it as e drive and paste the priv and pub edb files. After that, I did isinteg -patch. But I restart the system attendance, directory and MTA service before I do the isinteg -patch.
It managed to restore.

What is your reasoning behind just doing offline backups? The product is designed to be used with online backups. WIthout them, you have a less reliable, less resilient, less available email environment.

Hi!
It is easier to restore Exchange 5.5 server from scratch by using offline backup:

Here is how you restore Exchange 5.5 from scratch by using online backup:
