REGISTRY TROUBLES - CAN'T REBOOT TO NORMAL

I recently deleted some Symantec Norton program files in my registry. Now, I can't reboot to normal. It gives me STOP error messages concerning device drivers. Just before it quit rebooting, I was having program installation problems where programs wouldn't fully load.

I've tried to REPAIR the W2k OS by booting to the Windows OS CD. It doesn't fix this problem. I CAN boot to SAFE MODE, but don't really know what I can do to cure this problem. My system won't boot to Emergency Repair Disk at all.

Needless to say, I didn't back up the registry prior to deleting the files (STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!)

Can you do a total INSTALL over the current OS on the hard drive? Will that just cure the problems, or will it actually put a second copy of W2K on the drive?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try this, on your command prompt type sfc or sfc.exe with the original windows cd


If that doesn't fix it, try this on the command prompt
chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr

I did run chkdsk, but couldn't get it to accept chkdsk /p.

Couldn't figure out fixboot or fixmbr at command prompt (sorry but don't know much about DOS commands).

Could you please explain in more detail how I type it in?

Hi there, boot from cd, at recovery console type c, if taken directly to the path "c:\winnt"folder try going one folder up by typing "cd.." once at the "c:\" type fixmbr, fixboot, and try both chkdsk /f and chkdsk /v (typo on the previous one, sorry)

Your best bet might be a repair reinstall (NOT a repair) -

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292175&Product=win2000.

This will leave your settings, data & apps intact, lose windows updates (including service packs). Depending on that's wrong, it may or may not get you back (but often does). If it doesn't, I'd look at a clean reinstall after retrieving any data you need (eg, mount drive as slave in another machine, or install a parallel 2k installation (to a different folder - not \winnt).
