How do you increase the registry size on a Windows XP machine. Thanks

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the REG. in XP has no size limitation unlike other windows systems. Like I said I could be wrong.

Can you set a limit? In Win2k you could, but not in XP. Maybe there's a regkey somewhere? And what does that do anyways? Does it compact the reg or delete old values or what?

Hi eXpiation, When you install programs they install certain key values in the Registry for it to perform perfectly. But sometimes ppl install a lot of applications and when you install Win 2K from scratch the vaule is somewhere in the 50's and I increase it to 95 or 100. Just to give more space whatever it needs to do. And no it does not delete the old registry values. Hope that answers your question.

My question is actually: What happens when the limit is reached? Does it just give an error message if you want to insert more reg values when it's reached its limit? or does it sort of compact the registry when the limit is reached?

oops sorry. Yes in Win2k it displays a message on the screen saying that the registry size is low. Like a warning before it gets full so that it gives you time to add more space for the registry. Once it is full anynew applications that you install registry settings will not be applied until you increase the space.

I knew I read something somewhere. Have a look at this.
Registry Size Limit Has Been Removed From Windows XP (Q292726)
In Windows XP, the Registry Size Limit (RSL) functionality has been removed. Therefore, there are no longer any limits on the total amount of space that may be consumed by registry data (hives) in paged pool memory, and in disk space.
