Registry hack to change default IP in dial up sharing?

First of all I am a bit of a tech newbie so apologies if I have missed something obvious here.

My employer has a current LAN with static IPs but they are proposing using a win 2K server to allow two machines in a domain of seven or so running 98 to access ONE web page using a shared dial up connection. They do not want the other machines using the internet and don't want the users surfing all day !-)

Looking into the dial up sharing on win 2K server, I see it sets a default IP for an internal intranet of "192.168.0.1" subnet mask 225.225.225.0.
I know that this is supposed to be for "small office and home use" but if there is a way to hack the registry to replace that default address with my servers current internally allocated static IP, it would solve by problems. It would be much too much hassle to convert the whold network to DHCP allocation.
Failing that can anybody suggest an alternative way of setting up a connection so that these two machines can access one web site address, without going through the current LAN network, without giving each one a modem, which is the way it is now!

Thanks

If you have a Win 2000 Server you could setup a proxy server on your LAN and only allow these two users to access it. You cannot bypass the LAN if you dont want to use a modem on each PC. Also If you are using a router for internet access you can setup an access-list of allowed IP addresses on it.

Thanks for the advice SirLee. I was looking at possible proxy software which has to be reliable as this will be running on a production server 24x7, which has some other quite valuable stuff. Looking at the selection of proxies currently around, both shareware and registered software, is there a reliable aplication you would recommend? I see Microsoft Proxy server 2 seems like a good choice but are there any others?

Thanks once again.

I don't know about the shareware tools, but with Microsoft Proxy you can allow access only for certain users. But if that is the only reason you want to use a proxy I would recommend to save the money and let the router decide who is allowed access. What router are you using?

Other opinions?

For all kinds of free software including proxy servers try 32bit.bhs.com

The subnet must be 255.255.255.0 but you could buy a peace of hardware that lets you share internet connection up to 4 computers.

Good Luck

Thanks again for the response guys, as always with these kind of things the management are constantly dropping little bomb-shells of info into my plans.
The way things stand at present is:
1. LAN is connected to a premanant connection via router, carring myriad aplications.
2. The web site that we wish to grant access to is a RAS and requires a dial up so we can't use the permant connection.
3. The web site has call back setup as a security measure.

I am currently looking into a program called Proxy+, which is freeware for upto 2 users(which is perfect for my use! :) ). It appears to be able to filter access to certain net work address, and limit access to external IP addresses. I am a little concerned as to how it will cope with the fact the client uses dial back, as this opens a load of security issues regarding unauthourised dial-ins to our server,(especially as it is a key one).
If anybody out there has used this aplication or has further thoughts on a better way to solve this problem I would be very glad of the advice!

Best regards

All,

Just to conform, Proxy+ shareware filled all the criteria I needed, plus the demos' "2 consecutive users" meant it cost nothing!!

Thanks to all who thought about this,

Regards
