I keep booting up my pc and have been getting blue screens saying that the registry cannot be loaded. Managed to fix that using registry repair in win 2k and now my main profile cannot be loaded as it is corrupt. What is the likely cause of this ? Impending hard drive failure? I have been dogged by these problems for the last few weeks now and are wondering what i can do to pin point what is failing . Any suggestions?

There are a crapload of possible reasons...you're best bet is to create a new profile, but copy the important stuff from your current profile folder into your new one (e.g. Desktop, Application Data etc.)

If it happens again, then try a reinstall of Windows.

If it still continues to happen, then I'd guess Hard Drive failiure...but I'm not necessarily correct :) Try a thorough scandisk overnight (auto-fix enabled), or, better yet, get a Disk-Scanning Utility from your Hard Drive manufacturer (e.g. Maxtor, Samsung etc.) by going to their website and having a look around. These normally find problems than Scandisk can't (it's run in DOS Mode - so they normally give you an exe file to make a bootable floppy with the scanner on it).
