These 2 problems started about the same time:

After boot, there's always a Windows message that "a log file or backup" was successfully used to load the registry. There are no other registry problems. Changed registry values stay changed. I could do a repair reinstall but life's so short and there's sun with light breeze outside.

Also, the left side of the xp style start menu- quick start?- is black. (I googled it, but the only posters had problems caused by some kind of third party software).

The registry entry for the items that belong on the quick start menu is okay. Are there other registry entries?

I'd start by running chkdsk to see if you've filestore corruption issues and looking in the event log for possible clues (run eventvwr.msc).

Anything relevant here?

You receive a "One of the files in the registry database had to be recovered" message when you connect a Windows XP-based client computer to a Windows NT 4.0 domain

As to the Start Menu problem does it go away if you switch between Classic View and back, or if you log on in Safe Mode, or even logon on in Normal Mode but as another user?
