We moved a computer from one trusted/trusting domain to another, changing its ID. We tried to connect a network printer with a jet direct card in it. We get almost all the way through and get the following message: 'An appplication error has occurred and an application error log is being generated. Setup.exe Exception: access violation (0x0000005), Address: 0x0113c865'. We called HP (it's an HP 8000 printer) and they said the message means we don't have access to some part of the registry and that they can't help us, it's a Microsoft issue. We are logged on with full rights to the local machine and the domain. Any ideas/clues as to how we can obtain registry rights? I'm not sure, but I think someone did copy a user profile from another domain to this machine. We have installed this printer on half dozen other NT machines with no problem. Any help would be greatly appredciated. Thanks. -- Ham Rutledge

First thing I would try is to delete the user's profile that you are using to try and set this up. (Control Panel ¦ System ¦ User Profiles) I would first copy the contents of %windir%\profiles\<username> to a backup directory, just to ensure you do not lose anything important.
Once its deleted, reboot and log back in as that user. When you say you have full rights to the local machine, is the Domain Admin/User that you are using in the admiinistrator group or is a user of the same name in the Local Administrator's group? I have seen where the later can cause some problems... Add the Domain Admin/User to the Local ADministrator's group.
Any policies or profiles on this machine? That would be something else I might check out.
CAn you add a different printer to the system? Are you trying to set up the printer to be on this computer and shared throughout the network, or are you trying to connect to a printer that is already shared? Can you set up the printer without running through the setup.exe program? Its been a while since I set up a HP 8000, but you should be able to go through Add Printer ¦ Network Printer and choose the printer you want to add by saying "Have Disk".
Hope this helps a but,
Paul - Thanks for your response. First, your questions: we have successfully installed another printer on the computer, and we have successfully installed the HP 8000 on other computers on the network. The printer is not attached to any computer - it has a jet direct card in it. The Domain Administrators are members of the Administrators group for this machine. There are policies on the computer, which seem to be normal. I don't see any action in the policies which would bear on registry access.
We did remove the user profile and relog on as that user (who has administrative rights). Unfortunately, the problem is still with us. However, this time we were able to catch the registry entry that was causing the trouble: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_HPECP. Apparently we are not able to access ...\ROOT as the LEGACY_HPECP folder is not set up.

We also tried installing via the Have Disk option, but that didn't work. The only connect option that gave was LPT1, and then we get the error that there is no printer connected to LPT1.
Any help you (or anyone) could give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Ham Rutledge
