Regenerating or reinstalling Network Components in Win XP

With the hope that this has not been mentioned recently.

Symptoms : XP computers have device manager clean and without error and are running well, except .......
Right Clicking on My Network Places and selecting Properties. The window is EMPTY !! The icons are absent.
Thus no obvious possibility of Right Clicking the Local Area Connection (or any other), clicking Properties for setting up /modifying connections. True also for 'Network and Dial-up Connections/Local Area Connection'

In the last three days I have come across two computers running Win XP which have this singular lack and failing.
There are several standard techniques for resolving Network configs, reparing the system and this is what I tried.

Firstly since the Win XP was an SP1, I tried out the 'WinsockXPFix.exe' to no avail.
I then tried the usual 'netsh int ip reset' and the netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and the netsh int ip reset all. No good.
It would seem that there are some problems with the Connection Manager Service Error 2 and The AutoConnection Manager for Remote Access however in one Computer the network is still running correctly not withstanding this inconvenience.
Th second computer is blocked since it cannot reestablish or modify the Internet Network connection. (Internet via modem)

I have also tried dis and reinstalling the modem on one computer and also deleting the Winsock keys in the registry as suggested by Ms. KB299357 did not succeed here.

Lacking other solutions I tried a full OS update to SP2 which normally can correct certain registry errors during the operation. Still no good.

Question : Do you know of any utility which can completely regenerate or reinstall the full network interface with all registry keys in Win 2K and Win XP ?
or which can do a full disinstall, regclean and reinstall of the Network Interface ?

At present, apart from the obvious conclusion that som keys in the registry are amiss, my only other hope is to try and install another network card to see if this will regenerate the Network Components.

Thank you for any comments

Hello B

Thank you for the very interesting and seemingly appropriate link.
These were not server machines but simple XP machines, however this might still work.
To be noted that it mentions in step 2c the 'Remote Access Connection Manager (this service depends on Telephony service)' etc.
I had already checked this out earlier today and, as written, received an Error 2 message.
Should the services fail to load/start correctly I will not be able to follow the stated method. I'll check this out at the clients studio tomorrow morning and leave a comment here about the business.
Thanks again and best wishes

PS. If you noticed this and similar related links apply apparently only to :

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition (Itanium)
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

What do you think about the outcome in Win XP Home ?

Thanks

Been to the client's and tried out a number of techiques

The situation is pretty clear.
Unable to load the Connection Manager Remote Access Service, which then blocks AutoConnection Manager from starting.

Tried out practically all the options in 825826. (> 10)
Everything reset OK still no Icons.
Decide to try my idea of another Network Card and finally the Network icons appear so try for the New Connection RAS.
Permits only the Broadband connection. No Modem

Logical, in fact no RAS Service no Modem interface.

Tried the 'PPP\EAP\25' and '26' deletion still no go.
Q329441
Tried the Q320558 technique for dimmed icons
'Cards\NextID' No go.

Remains the delete 'telephony' key or try reinstall SP2

However this does not explain the inability to reload the Connection Manager Service !
Whats blocking it?

Received the usual 711 error which I checked out, see above.
Received also ERROR 2 "Connection Mangager Remote Access .... File not found for the ..." but no mention of the type or name of file.
Events not helpful here other than 711 & 2

Any ideas ??

Thanks

Both of these services are by default Manual, and both are only required if you are trying to make a remote connection to your local LAN. They are not necessary for normal LAN connections, or Terminal Services.

Your issues as well are likely due to the fact that
Routing and Remote Access Service is not available in XP Home.

Hi,

>>"The situation is pretty clear.
>>Unable to load the Connection Manager Remote Access Service, which then blocks AutoConnection Manager from starting."

>Both of these services are by default Manual, and both are only ??? required if you are trying to make a remote connection to your local LAN.

I have read that Remote Access Connection Manager alias 'rasman' = svchost.exe -k netsvcs should be functioning correctly for Modem Dial Ups ie Internet Connections DUN.
Dialup Networking Clients etc... !!?

The placing of the Net card was only to try and provoke a change.
The client in question does not yet have an internal Network in the place.
Only a correctly functioning Modem, tested through Hyperterminal to the provider.

>Your issues as well are likely due to the fact that

I beg your pardon but I believe that I have seen precisely this service there, which was by default was set to manual, not automatic.

The point here is however : to diagnose the failure of the Service, correct it and 'how to' create an Internet connection without the forementioned errors.

Hope this is clear.
BTW have you ever heard of the Error 2 related to the rasman service. Have not found much on it yet.
Thanks :)

Error 2 means the files are not found.
Routing and Remote Access Service is not available under XP Home.

Again, the other connection services you list are completely irrelelvant in the absence of a Domain or Workgroup logon supporting Netbios.

Thanks for the followup, sorry for the delay, an assistance elsewhere.

>Error 2 means the files are not found.
As I had stated before :
Received also ERROR 2 "Connection Mangager Remote Access .... File not found for the ..." but no mention of the type or name of file.
Events not helpful here other than 711 & 2

I knew that it meant an unfound file. The question is to what does it (file) refer to and why?

>the other connection services you list are completely irrelelvant in the absence of a Domain or Workgroup logon supporting Netbios.

I do not know how irrelevant these services are but even MS mentions them in all the links I included in the preceding messages; + as another example even though from a different cause the symptoms are the same. (Mention of XP Home also)

The question is how to avoid the error and be able to start the service.
When a new Inet connection is created and the options are dimmed MS states clearly that on needs to assure the correct starting of RAS.

Perhaps I have not understood well enough but whatever the case the problem still remains in that the computer will not create a new Modem to Internet connection and the errors are all on RAS services.

Any ideas?
Thanks again for your support.
