Hello,

My setup is Win2k server configured as a domain controller and 3 workstations with win-xp pro.

I am wanting to install software on the server and want my workstations to run the software via a shortcut on there desktop.

How will i achieve this, i dont want to use terminal services i just want to run the software from the server just as if it was installed on the local machine. Meaning i want the registry settings sent from the server where the software is installed and sent to the workstation when i double click the shortcut on the workstation desktop.

Thankyou.

Easy to say, but this depends on the applications involved. There are applications that supoprts network/simultaneous access, an d othef that doesn't suport.
If you are trying to hack this, then, I can just wish you luck. Possible to succeed, if the aplication is very friendly in configurations ( like specifying paths for temporary files, resources etc).

The software that am wanting to install on the server are licensed versions of photoshop 7, illustrator 10, dreamweaver mx 4, flash 5 etc.

Will i be able to do it with these applications??

As I said, it depends on what those software producers are saying. Possible some of them to be able to work in network configuration.
Again, if you want to hack, and make them work,, then you can just try, and spend some time.

Would i be better off with something like "ZENworks for servers". i head this distributes software to workstations via a shortcut on there deskyop. i dunno if you need netware for this tho.

It sounds like you want to do what TS does, but do not want to buy the licenses and install Terminal Server. Good luck, but I doubt you will succeed. If you want several users to be able to use applications on the server (Only ONE at a time!) then you could install PC-Anywhere or a similar program, but these applications will only let ONE USER AT A TIME access the remote system and run the application.

I have got term services running but not in application mode. this is only for my home network its not a business i am running.

I dont want to use term servies because i dont want to run apps from a window enviroment, i want to run them from the server as if it was installed on the local workstation. thats why i wanted to just use a shortcut on the workstation desktop to run the app from the server.

Any help will be most appreciated..

Many apps will run from the remote server, like Office, etc, but you need to install it that way, and pieces of the application will still need to be installed on each desktop (such as dlls and executable files), while the remainder of the application remains out on the server. Each application is different, and you need to read up on each to see if it will run that way, and if it will allow multiple users to access at the same time. Most data base systems are full of locks, etc, to prevent two users from changing the same file at the same time, for obvoius reasons. If your apps will support remote users, you do the minimum install locally and do the full install on the server, using a shar to access the server files.
