It's been a while since I partitioned any hard drives, without using Partition Magic.

I know the path to get there - in Disk Management. But I'd like a reminder of the proper choices to make in Windows XP, SP2.

I believe I right click on the physical D drive to get started.

I'll be starting off with a physical 160 GB SATA drive D, having no files on it, and fully formatted. I want to partition it to split it in half, and end up with drives D and E, each being roughly 80 GB.

Please list the specific choices and steps I then make, to end up with a partitioned hard drive with 2 partitions showing as logical drives D and E.

Thanks

I cant tell you exaclty without doing it which I cant do to my computers. You can right click the D drive and pick remove partition to get rid of the existing one. Then you can right click again and pick create partiton or create volume depening on if its a dynamic disk or not. Then put in the 80gigs and do it again to the rest of the unpartitioned space.

Thanks for the reply.

What you've noted is about what I expected to do. And, as you said, one can't get the exact choices without actually doing it on a drive. <G>

What exactly is a "dynamic disk"??

All I want to do is partition it into 2 logical drives.

From what I remember, after I've done the first partition, and I go to make the second one, the window will show me exactly how much space is left, and I can just accept that,

Anything here to help you?.

If the drive is already formatted, that partition will have to be deleted and two new partitions created and then both formatted. Read the last two links.

How To Use Disk Management to Configure Dynamic Disks in Windows XP

Hi Linney,

Thanks for the info. I think my confusion is related to the following quote from the MS doc.

Click the type of partition that you want to create (either Primary partition, Extended partition, or Logical drive), and then click Next.

After I delete the partition in the drive in question, which of the three choices above do I select? Since I want to end up with "logical drives", do I select that choice, or do I select "primary partition"?

Then when I create the second partition in that drive, which of the 3 choices do I select there?

According to the MS article, after the new partitions are created, they have to be formatted. I don't recall in the past having to format a previously formatted drive, when partitioning it. But if this is needed, is a "quick" format OK for this?

It would seem that my present situation does not involve "dynamic disks", or "volumes". Is this correct?

Thanks again -

This should clarify between Primary, Extended and Logical drives. It also offers information on Dynamic versus Basic Disks.
