Do you recommend refurbished or refilled printer cartridges?

How old is the printer? Refills sometimes void the warrenty. What is the cost difference between new and refurbished? As for refilled, you can usually get only 2-3 refills out of a cartridge (nozzles clog and electrical contact failure. I get mine online for about a third of what they charge at the store.

Printer is HP820 deskjet. About 4 years old. New cartridge cost's $27 and refurbished $7.95 at amazon.com.

Go refurbished. I've been doing this for years on my Epson. I've found that some generic cartridges actually have more ink (ml)than factory!

If the nozzles clog up you can fix it easily by putting the cartridges into very hot destilled water. Boil the water and let it stand for a few minutes. The best way is to use a cup and put only about 1 to 2 cm hot water inside. Put the cartridge inside with the printhead in the water. Let it stand for about 45 minutes. This only works with cartriges which have a build in print head!!! After the treatment refill and the printing should be like new again. Regards

Thanks for those tips. They will save me a lot of $s.

jurgen gives good advice...

I had a "printhead cleaning compound" included with a refill kit that worked well. The manufacturer told me it was a trade secret but their MSDS sheet showed it to be about 75% deionized water and 25% isopropyl alcohol.

...worked about the same as a few minutes in hot water. Do the same if the printhead clogs and you know you still have ink in the cartridge.

I just recently tried refurbished cartridges online for my epson color stylus 1160. It's about 3 years old, and new cartridges would have cost $59 for both. I paid $14 online, and they work great.

I have a difficult time justifying paying as much money for ink as I could for a new printer, so if refurbished works, go for it.
