I am trying to automate a page number reference in Word whereby I have a footer on each page along the lines of "Continued.......xx" where [/u]xx is the number of the next page. I think I need to use a formula such as 1+ "Page" number field but Word won't accept any variations I try.

Any suggestions please?

This isn't generally done to continue on the "next page", but on the page where the item is continued.

You can insert a bookmark on the text of the next page, and then insert a cross-reference to the bookmark in the footer. Unfortunately, you'll need a footer on every page. You might want to consider doing it as a textbox instead.

Try using a nested field code.

Make sure you have switched to view field codes instead of results.
[ul][li]Insert Field, Formula. Type 1 + 1. The "+ 1" is not really necessary, it's just that I find easier that way. Click OK.[/li]
[li]In the field code remove the second "1". Insert Field, Numbering, Page.[/li][/ul]

The field code then is: { = 1 + { PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT}\*MERGEFORMAT}.

The variation for Dreamboat's remark about "continued from ..." would be { = -1 + { PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT}\*MERGEFORMAT}. Dreamboat offers an excellent suggestion as it does away with the issue of the last page.
