Referer from forwarded domain?

It's probably impossible but I'll ask it anyway.

I have a domain on which I'm NOT hosting my pages.
Instead this "easy-to-remember" domain name is forwarding to another site (where hosting is free) and where the name is "not-that-easy-to-remember".

Now I realize that I would have loved to retrieve the referring page of my visitors. But as I understand it the forwarding procedure kills that possibility and the referring url will always be the "easy-to-remember" domain name because it comes between the referring page and the "not-so-easy-to-remember" domain.

Or is there any way to get the orginal referring page?

Your easy-name-to-remember site could capture the referer that got the browser that far and include that data in the URL when it directs the browser to your hard-name-to-remember site.

Just keep in mind that sending any referer data to a server is optional. Some browsers have the ability to turn off referer sending.

I asked them to do exactly that but they "don't have any other scripting sevices available"...

I mean:

The other day I asked them to forward the referer because it was the only way I could think of mysalef. But that solution didn't work out because they replied: "We don't have such scripting services available".

I bought the domain name there but they are not hosting my pages because I have a place where I can host the pages for free.

Oh. Then all you have is a redirect service. No, you can't preserve the data through that.

I recommend you make arrangements to get served from a server to which you can directly point your domain name.

But how can I change things now?
I bought the domain name there.
Am I not stuck with them now?

I don't know. I've owned my own domain name since 1998. I've never been required to host a web site in any specified location.

I recommend that you talk with your registrar and find out what is available to you.

But you have a place where you have your pages?
What if you change that place?
What will you have to do to make the domain name find the new place?

It's not where a domain name is registered that determines where it's hosted. Where your site can be found is determined by to which IP address DNS resolves your web site URL.

When I move my site, I change my domain's DNS to match the new IP address. I do the same for mail. The DNS servers for my domain name are at zoneedit.com -- all I have to do is log in through their web interface and make the necessary changes.

I think, though, that we are no longer discussing PHP questions here. If this is the case, this thread is no longer apropos to this forum.

Just because you registered a domain name with a registrar does not necessarily mean you have to host with them. Do they offer you a domain name configuration panel?

I have a domain name registered with godaddy which offers hosting plans, but I also have a configuration panel where I can change my Domain Name Servers(DNS). The DNS provides the server name of where website is housed. This way you can register your domain with a registrar and host the website else where.

I also got suckered into purchasing a domain name from another registrar which charged a $250 fee to allow hosting through a different company, you have to read the fine print, which I did not...

We're talking GoDaddy here too.
Lucky me.
And yes, I just found their DNS-panel.

But what will i need to do on the other host where I have their pages?

If I understand this correctly I need to find my host's DNS and use it with GoDaddy?

OK, I figured things out.
I reg'd my domain with the actual IP I got with my host, on a site that does those things. Then changed the nameservers with Godaddy.
