Hi all,

I am having real trouble trying to move my SQL server because I cannot refer to our external server by name.

The old server some how recognises the name and applies a specific IP to the name... if i ping the server name from our current server it displays correct IP, if i ping from any other machine in the network i get a different result!!!

I am guessing that this is named or defined somewhere within windows, which i need to replicate so I can move my SQL server (for sql server replication i have to use name not ip)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

it works on my machine, so technically i win!

ipconfig /flushdns should remove any cached entries on the computers. If still having issues check for a HOST file entry.

Do these servers have the same name?

You cannot have the same named device on a connected network.

Fixed the issue, turned out to be quite simple.

My issue was, our current sql server replicates out to our external website, it uses sql replication engine to do this and it requires a named server to connect to (not just an IP)

I am moving my SQL databases to a new SQL server and was attempting to create the replication out to website but would not accept the named server for my web server (which I presumed was known network wide)

It was down to HOSTS file on the original sql server matching the name to the IP.

I have recreated on new sql server and overcome the problem...

I have since created a dns record for it on our DC instead so it is seen network wide with no need for HOSTS files.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction
