refer to a variable

If I have a value stored in one frame as part of the querystring, or in a vbscript variable, is there any way I can open a page in a right hand side frame (same screen) and refer to that value, WITHOUT using request.querystring?

(ALSO does anyone know the javascript syntax for giving focus to a frame within a a different browser window X from a current open browser window Y?)
