Hi,

I plan to purchase a PE2600 for my company. Does anyone know about the RPS that is optional with this server? More specificly, would you recommend it? If one power supply fails, does the motherboard automatically take power from the spare redundant, or do I have to manually switch over?

Thanks for any info,
Danny

The answer to the question is, can you afford for your server to go down if a PSU fails? I would say "No" every time so the answer is very clear to me.

I would not purchase a server without a redundant PSU. The 2600 systems I have purchased have 3 PSU's (call me paranoid!!). If one fails the next in line will take over without interruption. You can then hot swap the faulty unit.

The 2600 also has (an option I think) dual power input modules so you can hook the power in from different power circuits so if one fails the other takes over.

Hope this helps

I'm a big fan of redundant PSU's. They both operate at the same time so there is no switch over if one fails, just one draws more power when it happens.

There have been a few times when someone has accidentally pulled the plug out on one PSU on a production server while recabling where a redundant PSU saved us some downtime. Also if you are recabling you can switch the server between power supplies without powering it down which has come in useful for us in the past.
