Redundant Domain Authentication

I have a group of servers in their own domain, with their won domain controller, separated from the primary domain with a primary domain controller via DMZ. Earlier this week one of our servers failed it's application and I was told it was due to the primary DC failing because of an unscheduled Windows update. I was told that there is no way to determine which DC the servers will authenticate to and if the one it does authenticate to goes down, I will need to reboot the server. The two DC's are on Active Directory so to keep a single source for management. Is there a way of either directing which DC to authenticate to or (better) an automatic failover between domain controllers?

I will need to check that out, though I don't believe they are both DNS.

DNS is used heavily in Active Directory. It's used to locate resources, such as the global catalog servers and other services. If your DNS server goes down, finding that information is not possible - without another DNS Server. So that would be a problem. Further, Global Catalogs are used for logon authentication - if you don't have one (because it went down), you will also have problems.
