Reducing size of document with scanned object

Our invoice database is growing fast. I have had a look at the document properties. In the body field the invoice is shown as an 'object' and the size of the body field is big. But when I look at the attachments of the document in the $FILE field (also via document properties) I see also a size twice as the body field. When I run several times an agent to set the field $FILE to "" (empty the field) my document size reduces by 70%, so my database size also. After this I can still open and edit the document and the quality of the scanned invoice remains the same.

Does any user have the same experience and have additional info?
Does removing/emptying the $FILE fields have impact on your Notes?

Are these scans really attached or are they embedded?
