A beginners question: How can I reduce the size and storage of images for the web? I seem to remember a ps facility something like 'save to web' which offered 4 options for density, but I can't find it now. Also, is simply specifing the image size in html the best way to reduce the image size? Any help will be much appreciated. I'm using 5.0.
Thanks.

'Save for Web' is in v5.5 or later.

Save as jpeg with higher compression to reduce the size of the image.

If I understand you correctly; Specifying the image dimensions in the html won't reduce the image size, it will compress the image to fit the page, but the pic will still be the same size.

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

Of course cropping is the ultimate saver (when possible) You can also try reducing the number of colors.

Thanks to you both for your help. Do I conclude, then, that using 5.5 is the only way to accomplish pixel density reduction while maintaining the same image dimensions? Alternately, there is no way to reduce density at the same time as reducing image dimensions?

Thanks again.

to reduce the pixels per inch PPI (by default 72 PPI for web graphics) and 300 DPI (dots per inch) @ least for print, use the image size dialogue.

in... "Image>Image Size",

you can specify the image resolution (PPI/DPI) and pixel dimensions.

Look in the help files for more info.

Hello again barehug.

Thanks for your further and detailed explanation. It works just as you say and, since I've got 80 images to optimize, your advice is a great help!

I'll open myself up to ridicule here I'm sure, but for batch resizing and many other features try IrfanView It saves a photographer friend hours of sitting at the computer and he will run several hundred at a time.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

Pyrrhus - write a batch script dude! It will take seconds to deal with 80 images... and they are easy to write!

Also i've noticed that Fireworks tends to make JPEG's about half the size, and the same quality, as Photoshop can! Fireworks is also scriptable

If you need a hand writing a batch script give me a shout

Kind Regards
Duncan
