reducing a rootvg filesystem

How can I reduce the size of a rootvg filesystem (not part of the BOS). I know this can be done by frigging around with a file, creating a mksysb with the ammended file and restoring the mksysb.

Can someone tell me what files need to be changed and what other steps need to be taken.

backup data in FS ( tar, cpio, backup )
check backup
remove FS
recreate FS with reduced Size
restore Data.
