I (think I) understand that if non-MAPI clients, like Outlook Web Access, are used exclusivly, that users emails will stay in the priv1.stm file.

Would getting them to open Outlook from time to time move some content from the priv1.stm to priv1.edb files?

Or does this only happen if they actually open an email in Outlook. i.e. would they have to re-open all their emails via Outlook.

No. The .edb and .stm files contain different kinds of info. Using OWA vs. Outlook makes no difference as to where the data is stored. And both comprise the size of the database, so it doesn't matter if it's in one or the other.

Thanks for your response.

Can the .stm file be reduced in size?

I have a situation where there is very little disk space left.
My users regularly delete attachments and after the overnight online defrags I have a comfortable about of free space in the .edb file as seen from Event ID 1221.

But the .stm file is slowly growing. If they where asked to deleted attachments that where stored in the .stm would it shrink, or at least stop increasing in size? And if yes, what files should I ask them to remove?

TIA
