reduce pdf size

Hi,
I have a word doc file with charts and bitmaps special pasted into it from Excel. The size is about 1 megabyte. I was asked to reduce the size and I thought acrobat is the way to go. I realized after writing it to a pdf file the size did not change. I read there is an option to compress in acrobat but I wasn't to achieve it. How do I go about reducing the size.

If you have distiller install which is the program that creates the PDF file, you can change the quarlity of the graphic and compress them another way. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.
