Redirects

I'm in danger of falling into the "use the search function" camp here.. but I'm having a brain f@rt and need to clear something up to rassure myself.

I discovered that my employer owned a few extra domain names so decided to point them at the company site

http://www.targetgroup.co.uk

Now, the extra domains are registered with easily.co.uk so I used their control panel to change the name server to those of our web host and set up stuff over there so that those domain names pointed at the same root directory as the "main" one.

It all works fine, no problems there.
Then I decided to run a redirect check from

http://www.webconfs.com/redirect-check.php

It tells me that there either isn't a redirect in place or it's not search engine friendly.

I *think* it's OK, but can someone confirm this for me one way or the other. If it's not then I will change the domains to point at a page with a 301 redirect.

If all the domain names return 200 to the user agent they will be seen as duplicates and all but one will get buried by the dup filter, usually not the one you want to survive either. To add to that each SE could pick a different one depending on their criteria of importance. A 301 redirect will make sure this doesn't happen.

Check the response codes with WebBug or you could give this a test. Still a work in progress btw.

Yes they return a 200 code.
Seems kind of unfair that doing something like this would cause a "problem". Still, I can see how it could be abused.

I better change them quick.

Are you sure your response code detection is working correctly?

I just checked

http://www.foamcow.com/blog.php

which just contains a PHP script that sends a 301 response and redirects to foamcow.com/rant.php

Your doo-dah said it gave a 200.
Or is that right? I can't think.. I just watched Troy and my brain hasn't woken up again yet.

not 100% sure yet, need some more testing on it. Seems fine at hostname level and with server redirects but isn't overly fond of scripted ones.
But heyho, it's all part of the fun.
