I am a complete linux newbie and only know the basics when it comes to networking.

This is what I have:

1 x pc installed with Redhat 9.0
3 x pc's installed with Windows XP Pro
1 x HUB (with enough cables to connect all machines)
* all pc's have identical ethernet cards installed (RTL8139)

What I would like to do with all this gear is network them all together so that the Redhat 9.0 acts as a server (file/print/etc....).

These machines were networked previously so I know all the gear is working so physical connectivity isn't an issue here.

To start with, how do I 'make' my Redhat machine act as 'the server' and how do I assign IP addresses (or what have you) to each machine so that they can 'talk' to each other?

I know this is a lot to ask, but I have been looking at resources all over the internet...and always seem to end back at square one.

If anyone can point me in the right direction they would be doing me a HUGE favor.

Thanks

For a windows style file server, you'll need to install Samba on the RedHat box.

Check that the appropriate module is installed for your network card...

To get a network up, you can type
>> "ifconfig eth0 up 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0"

>> "ifconfig"
should then show you eth0 with an IP address allocated.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Thanks manarth

Great!!! That was simple...I knew I just needed a shove in the right direction.

Now I'm setting up a Samba Server, it sorta works, but having lots of teething problems....guess I'll post something in the Samba Forum...

Thanks Again

I use Webmin's samba module for my samba needs. I love webmin. The web interface is nifty because you can login and reconfigure stuff from any station on your LAN without having to *gasp* get up and walk waaaaaay over there to the box and fire up vim ;-)

Hey thanks for that....I've just checked out what webmin does and its is cool :)....

Just make sure that webmin isn't open to the internet - all someone would have to do is guess your password and they'd have complete control.

Good point there smah. I guess I should have mentioned I refuse to run it on a 'public'/internet-accessible address. Someone guesses your password, they can fdisk, format, reboot, then the crying starts...

I was mentored by one of those security-paranoid types, kind of take that sort of thing for granted I guess ;-)

You can tighten down webmin by using the IP access control in Webmin Configuration to allow access only by certain IP ranges or hostnames. You can also change the default listening port.

great convo guys...good advice too...cheers!
