I have both a RedHat 7.2 running samba and a kernel 2.2.4 machine on a network that was recently converted from a peer-to-peer to DHCP network with a Windows 2000 SBS as the controller. Since then, there have been problems with share permissions and mapped drives on the redhat box. Mainly, people can not write to the shares. What I have done after researching is chmod -R all permissions on those folders. THis has worked, but I wonder if new folders created by users over the network with retain these rights, or if they will be only writeable by the owner.

We never had these problems in peer-to-peer. Is there a reason this has been happening and what would be the best way to solve it.

Sorry, no answer just dumb question. Why did you add the Win2000 machine and what are you using it for?

The 2000 machine was a NT4 machine. We just upgraded it to SBS 2000 for DHCP and more importantly, Exchange server.

It may be that the Samba is getting it's wires crossed between user and share security. Have a look at this:
Although it's from the SuSE site and the english translation appears a bit dodgy, it may give you a clue

Another question for you - If the only reason that you went from Nt4 to W2000 was to get a DHCP and mail server, why did you not just run them on the RH box ?

Just curious

Pete...

THanks for the advice, I'll investigate this further...

The reason we chose 2000 SBS is for Exchange and the Outlook capabilities...I was aware that redhat can do DHCP, but didn't think it could integrate with Outlook so well, am I wrong? I suppose its a little too late to ask those questions:p

be sure your smb.conf contains these:

encrypt passwords = yes
security = domain
workgroup = <WORKGROUP>
password server = <LIST_OF_DOMAIN_CONTROLLERS>

can I then leave out the smbpassword file? (If I point it to a password server?)

Also, I did have the security = share. Is that a problem? Is that why the folder permissions were over-writing the samba config?

I thought it only worked with security = user??

well i guess it all depends on how the win2k sbs server is configured.

do you still have a workgroup or is it a domain?

i assumed that in the original post when SpecSys said that the win2k box was acting as a controller it is a domain controller.

if it's an nt4 domain my original post will be what you want. i think you can leave out the smbpasswd file out - it should be sending all auth queries to the pdc.

but if it's an active directory i think your chances of getting samba to work with it are close to none (for the time being at least).

i could be wrong on all this - it's been a while since i've messed with samba...

Well, it is a domain and we are running active directory. There are actually two boxes on the network running linux. One with redhat and one with an older version, I believe kernel 2.2.. something. I did not set that one up. Also, that one has had no problems in the changeover. And in fact, the redhat server is running as we want it to now. I am still going to look at both smb.conf files and compare, hopefully get them equal. I would like to actually consolidate the two boxes into one server.
