Redhat, Mandrake, Caldera - Whats the Difference 1

Hi I just installed Mandrake Linux yesterday and am quite excited at getting my hands on something new.

I really want to get my teeth into this but are all Linux commands/options basically standard - or are there major differnces with the different distributions, which is the best one to go with?

Any help at this early stage would be appreciated.

, most of the distros have all got the same packages and all have the majority of the gnu code as well (

. Plus, of course, the same kernel - subject to a few patches here and there!

There are differences, of course, but these are mostly in the way the startup scripts are arranged, config directories, and admin tools provided.

for a newbie, any dist will do. They are relatively comparable. Once you master one all others should be an easy transition.
