Hi, not sure how to explain it.

I hv a DELL box running Redhat linux. After I hv logged in, I will type "startx" and a nice GUI appears which will look like Windows, with some icons etc on the desktop. When I click on right/left mouse button, some menu will appear.

However, recently, after I hv powered off the server and power it on again after a few days, when I typed "startx", the GUI which appeared is blank now. There is still a menu bar at the top, but it is blank on the desktop, i.e. no icons. When I clicked on right/left mouse button, no more menu :(

Anyone can explain what happened?
I hv no idea how to tackle this at all. Pls help.
Thanks.

Once in a while I do face such a symptom but not sure if it is the same cause. For me, I just switch over to another text console and issue: killall -s 9 nautilus; akin to killing explorer.exe on Windows when the desktop goes funny.

Thanks zeland, I hv killed all nautilus but problem is still there. Any other suggestion? Thanks...

can you logon to the Gnome desktop using another user account? If you can, then it might be that you gnome desktop configuration is corrupted. In your home folder: rm -rf .gnome*.

Hi zeland,
I hv removed all .gnome folders, but the problem is still there. Is there any other suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Does it work with other user accounts?

It has only one user account, so can't try.

Can you create another user to try?
