Hi,
I have 2 bad disks in a Raid5 system, I must change them and restore the backup. Before changing them I suppose that I have to remove the ext2 filesystem that is on it, delete the partitions then destroy the Raid5, change the disks, recreate the Raid5 then the partitions and the filesytems? How to remove an ext2 filesystem ? Thanks for help

If you have 2 bad disks in a RAID5, then you've lost all of the data, including the filesystems and partition tables. I'm presuming this is the case since you say you need to do a restore anyway. So you have no filesystem to remove.

Thanks
Do I need to distroy the Raid5 or just change the 2 drives
then re-create the partition on the drive and so on ?

It really depends on the RAID5 implementation. Is it software or hardware RAID? If so, what software/hardware? Have you checked the documentation for it?

Annihilannic.

Thanks,

It is a hardware Raid, I replaced the disks and recreated
the filesystem but I am facing another problem with
the fstab file, I removed the line "LABEL=/data /data"
corresponding to that filesystem and created a line with
"/dev/cciss/c0d1p1 /data".
How can I set back the LABEL ? I do not understand very well as it works.
Thanks for help

I have got the answer "e2label".
Thanks by the way.

My next problem would be how to save the operating system
and restore it easily in case of system disk crash without re-installing Linux, I mean /, /usr, /var , ....

You could use one of the built-in OS utilities like tar or cpio and back it up to tape, or to another hard drive, or another system across the network. I'm sure there are fancier options out there as well. What device are you planning to back up to?

Annihilannic.

Thanks,
I am planning to back up to tape.
Ok to backup with tar or cpio . How to restore ?

Djessi

You also restore with tar or cpio. Have a read of the man pages...

Annihilannic.

Thanks,
More precisely, how to boot before restoring
with tar or cpio, as far as Redhat is concerned.
