Redhat Enterprise AS

Hi,
Ive got an HP server which is running Red Hat Enterprise AS. The server has 1gb of RAM, but I want to add an extra 4gb. Can I easily find out whether the kernel can handle this amount of memory, or is it just a suck it and see scenario?

I believe 2.4 kernels can map 4 Gigabytes of physical memory, you might be able to boost this using CONFIG_BIGMEM but i have no experience with that
